The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the moves in court.
